Critical Phenomena in Gravitational Collapses of Neutron Star Systems

چکیده
We study critical phenomena in gravitational collapses of stellar objects based on numerical solutions of the Einstein equations. We discovered that stellar objects with large kinetic energy described by an equation of state (EOS) commonly used in describing neutron star matter may undergo critical collapses. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study showing that critical collapses can occur without postulating an exotic EOS. We further showed that the critical collapses can occur due to an adiabatic change of the EOS, without fine tuning of the initial conditions. This opens the possibility that a neutron-star-like compact object with substantial kinetic energy, e.g. one newly formed in a supernova or in a binary coalescence, may undergo a critical collapse in processes which change the EOS, such as cooling. We investigated the properties of the critical solutions of this system. We found, surprisingly, that there are branches of critical solutions, and a complicated phase diagram not been seen in other critical collapse studies. The numerical simulations were carried out based on the full set of the Einstein equations coupled to the general relativistic hydrodynamic equations. The code we

Detectability of Gravitational Radiation from Prompt and Delayed Star Collapse to a Black Hole
We consider the emission of gravitational waves in the two proposed models for the collapse of a massive star to a black hole: the prompt collapse, in which nearly all the star collapses to a black hole in a dynamical time scale, and the delayed collapse, in which a light black hole, or a neutron star, which subsequently accretes matter, forms due to the fall-back achieving, in the neutron star...
متن کاملGamma-ray Bursts from Neutron Star Mergers and Evolution of Galaxies
Most of proposed models of cosmological gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are associated to gravitational collapses of massive stars, and hence evolution of the GRB rate, which is crucially important in GRB intensity distribution analysis, is determined by the cosmic star formation history. Here we present complementary results of GRB logN -logP analysis, which were omitted in the previous paper (Totani ...
متن کاملCritical phenomena in head-on collisions of neutron stars.
We find type I critical collapses of compact objects modeled by a polytropic equation of state (EOS) with a polytropic index Gamma=2 without the ultrarelativistic assumption. The object is formed in head-on collisions of neutron stars. Further, we show that the critical collapse can occur due to a change of the EOS, without fine-tuning of initial data. This opens the possibility that a neutron-...
متن کاملEffects of hyperons in binary neutron star mergers.
Numerical simulations for the merger of binary neutron stars are performed in full general relativity incorporating both nucleonic and hyperonic finite-temperature equations of state (EOS) and neutrino cooling. It is found that even for the hyperonic EOS, a hypermassive neutron star is first formed after the merger for the typical total mass ≈2.7M(⊙), and subsequently collapses to a black hole ...
متن کاملSupermassive Stars as Gamma-Ray Bursters
We propose that the gravitational collapse of supermassive stars (M ∼> 5× 10 M⊙) could be a cosmological source of γ-ray bursts. Supermassive stars could form as an intermediate step in the collapse of relativistic star clusters, or in supermassive clouds with inefficient cooling. Supermassive stars would be de-stabilized by the Feynman-Chandrasekhar instability and could collapse to black hole...
